Sophronio Vasquez, who moved from the Philippines to Utica in 2023, won the 26th<\/sup>\u00a0season of The Voice television show in December.<\/p>\n

Coach Reba McEntire has the best teeth on the show, said Vasquez, a graduate of a dental school in the Philippines. His coach, Michael Buble\u0301, has nice teeth, too, but he\u2019s had cosmetic work done. McEntire has a beautiful, natural smile, he said.
\nWhat don\u2019t most people know about Buble\u0301? \u201cI think people don\u2019t know that he is very funny. No, people know about his (being) funny, but he\u2019s very personal,\u201d Vasquez said. \u201cHe started as someone that\u2019s like us. He was rejected many times, too, and he just persisted. And he\u2019s really helpful and genuine. And he\u2019s a good stylist. He would tell me, \u2018I don\u2019t like your outfit.\u2019\u201d \u00a0And Vasquez would then change.
\nCoach Snoop Dogg, whom Vasquez called his uncle, wasn\u2019t Vasquez\u2019s coach, but he still checked in with Vasquez after every show and offered to fly his mother out from the Philippines. \u201cSnoop Dogg,\u201d Vasquez said, \u201cis one of the most genuine people I ever worked with.\u201d
\nCoach Gwen Stefani \u201cis always pretty, even without makeup,\u201d Vasquez said. \u201cYeah, I saw her without makeup and she\u2019s always pretty.\u201d
\nHe calls coach Reba McEntire mom and she likes being called mom. She\u2019s really sweet and even more real than she seems on TV, he said.
\nShow staff shopped for contestants\u2019 wardrobes. Contestants also had professionals working on their hair and makeup.
\nVasquez developed a new personal style that often meant wearing suits or a jacket, even a trench coat, on TV. \u201cI could never imagine myself wearing hats and now it\u2019s become a little bit of my brand,\u201d he said. It was too hot for hats in the Philippines and worrying about style wasn\u2019t a thing either, Vasquez said. \u201cWe just had white T-shirt and pants and we\u2019re fine,\u201d he said.
\nBuble\u0301 gave Vasquez two pieces of particularly good advice. The first one was that just because he can do something, doesn\u2019t mean he should, Vasquez said. For example, Vasquez shouldn\u2019t do so many runs while singing even if he can or he shouldn\u2019t choose a song just because he can sing it if the song doesn\u2019t fit him, Vasquez explained. And the second: \u201cBe your own superhero,\u201d Vasquez said. He took that to mean that even superheroes sometimes fail and need help. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid, just try,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be perfect. You don\u2019t have to be the strongest.\u201d
\nHe met Kelly Clarkson and Martha Stewart. Stewart asked where he was from and then said that she loves the Philippines. \u201cShe is so nice,\u201d Vasquez said.<\/p>\n
