He\u2019s shocked, not only because he just won the NBC singing competition, but because he defeated fellow Bubl\u00e9 team member Shye to do it. They were the last two standing.<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"4RIcYrzR\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/thmb\/zDl9ewuSpsC1es44zg5CrpSX9NE=\/1500x0\/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)\/Sofronio-Vasquez-Michael-Buble-The-Voice-121124-b82f0cfb16834ab8bf0545becc5ebe81.jpg\" alt=\"Sofronio Vasquez gave 'The Voice' coach Michael Bubl\u00e9 his first win\" width=\"1000\" height=\"668\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it was down to me and Shye, and Shye is a beast vocalist \u2014 again, she\u2019s really great in her music, in her artistry,\u201d Vasquez tells EW, \u201cI really thought that Shye was going to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"i1byBn2a\"><\/div>\n<p>Both contestants were powerhouses, and Vasquez in particular performed songs from various genres, from Roy Orbison\u2019s \u201cCrying\u201d to \u201cA Million Dreams\u201d from The Greatest Showman movie (below).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sofronio Vasquez Performs &quot;A Million Dreams&quot; From The Greatest Showman | The Voice Finale | NBC\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iV1_ZeofKAA?feature=oembed\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-origwidth=\"790\" data-origheight=\"444\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Vasquez ultimately triumphed, but the 32-year-old nicknamed \u201cThe Filipino Phenom\u201d plans to stay close to Shye, a teen from Bethlehem, Pa., who sang folk-ish songs from Harry Styles and Joan Osborne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe and Shye are just family here,\u201d says Vasquez, a native of Mindanao, Philippines, who now lives in Utica, N.Y. \u201cWe are always in shock, even from the playoffs moving to the live shows, like, oh my gosh, we started from 14 down to two for a team play. We are just laughing about it. Yeah. So after this press junket, I\u2019ll get time with Shye. I get to sit down with her later tonight and spend the day, spend the night with her and her family because they are the only family I have here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/thmb\/rL40NM0uLmFn0jVOc4N_yb1okHE=\/1500x0\/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)\/Sofronio-Vasquez-Skye-The-Voice-121124-1-13b8a594ab1a4e0ab569ccbad834006e.jpg\" alt=\"'The Voice' contestants Shye and Sonofrio Vasquez await the big reveal\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vasquez mentioned on the NBC series that he was inspired in the competition by the recent loss of his father. Still, he wasn\u2019t sure he could walk away with the \u201cW,\u201d at least at first. It took until the top five contestants were revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the moment that I felt like, I think I can do it, is the first live shows, the results day,\u201d Vasquez says. \u201cFor the first week of live shows from top eight to top five, I was the first one to be called in for the finale. So I know that the [finalist] rankings are random, but it\u2019s one way of saying that I\u2019m in the finale, so I\u2019ve got like one out of five chance to win The Voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, the moment Vasquez was named the winner, he fell to his knees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow. The first reaction was shock for sure,\u201d he recalls to EW. \u201cI can clearly remember what I felt during the moment that Carson Daly called my name. It\u2019s just a flashback for all of the dreams that I had in the past. And the first thing that I did was hug my brother in the audience, which Michael Bubl\u00e9 helped me do\u2026and then went to the biggest party ever that I\u2019ve been [to] in America for the first time and that was the wrap party for the show, and it was an awesome experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just because the competition is over, Vasquez is not saying goodbye to Shye or even his Grammy-winning coach, with whom he truly bonded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what? It\u2019s so surprising that people would always say, \u2018You look so at home with each other. You\u2019re like a family,&#8217;\u201d Vasquez says. \u201cBut I\u2019m always intimidated by Bubl\u00e9, and I always called him sir, and he was like, \u2018No, stop calling me sir. I\u2019m Michael. I\u2019m just like you.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vasquez notes that his culture uses the term simply as a sign of respect.
