Courtney Hadwin talks about fame, music and finding her own path after going viral at 13 with a voice the world didn’t see coming

With a viral audition that shocked the world and a voice that draws comparisons to Janis Joplin, British singer-songwriter Courtney Hadwin is proving she’s more than just a moment — she’s a movement.

At just 13 years old, Hadwin became an international sensation after her electrifying performance on America’s Got Talent captivated millions. Now, at 20, she’s on the cusp of a major milestone: the release of her debut album, “Little Miss Jagged,” set to drop on September 12, 2025. Ahead of her return to the stage, Courtney sat down for a candid chat about her journey, her music, and what’s next.

“I’m Just Being Me and That’s Enough”

Fresh off rehearsals for her first live show in London, Courtney spoke with NSG’s Billy Vitch, sharing how she’s balancing the excitement of a new chapter with the roots of her small-town upbringing in northeast England.

“I grew up in a tiny village between Hartlepool and Durham,” she said. “Everyone knew everyone — it had one school, a shop and a pub. It definitely shaped my songwriting as I got older.”

Though her sound spans pop, rock, blues, and soul, Courtney says her voice wasn’t molded by her environment — it came from within. “My parents didn’t know any of the artists who inspired me. I found them on my own and introduced them to my family through my singing.”

Growing Up in the Spotlight

It’s impossible to talk about Courtney Hadwin without mentioning America’s Got Talent. Her 2018 audition performance of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle” has since racked up more than 310 million views, and her wild stage presence immediately drew comparisons to legends like Janis Joplin.

But going viral at 13 wasn’t all glamorous.

“I’m so grateful for the show — it gave me my start and helped me find the most loyal fans,” she shared. “But growing up in public is hard. People still see me as that 13-year-old, even though I’ve grown and changed in every way — musically, personally, everything.”

“Personality D.N.A.” and Little Miss Jagged

When asked which song best reflects who she is today, Courtney didn’t hesitate. “Personality D.N.A. or Electric Shines. They’re both upbeat with a funky, soulful vibe — that’s me.”

Her debut album, “Little Miss Jagged,” is a long time coming. The record, expected this fall, blends genres and reflects her artistic growth. “There’s something for everyone on it. You’ll hear the soul, the edge, and a little bit of everything I love.”

Courtney also talked about her writing process. “There’s no formula. Sometimes it’s a lyric, sometimes a melody — it depends on my mood.”

Inspirations, Dreams and Dinner Guests

Courtney credits Little Richard as her biggest influence. “He made me believe I could be myself on stage. His energy, his soul — it was like he gave permission to be bold.”

If she could have dinner with anyone, past or present? “Little Richard, of course. Kevin Hart because he’d kill the awkwardness, and Brittany Murphy. I think she would’ve had so many great stories.”

And when it comes to finding happiness, her advice is simple: “Live every day like it’s your last. Be your most unique self and be kind.”

What’s Next for Courtney Hadwin?

Courtney is currently expanding her UK tour dates and promises there’s more to come. “Tickets are already up on my website, and I’m really hoping to play in Liverpool. I’ve never been, but I love the accent — it’s one of my top two favorites alongside Irish.”
